Operating from Security

A Jewish man said that the only thing that counts is faith, expressing itself through love.

What is faith?

1. complete trust or confidence. 2 strong belief in a religion. 3 a system of religious belief. (OED)

What is faith to me?

Faith is complete trust or confidence in someone else. My faith is complete trust or confidence in God. HOWEVER my faith wears thinner than tracing paper on a daily basis and I cease to trust or have confidence in God. I fuel a furnace inside myself, believing that I must make myself good, I must do something important. I have to make myself good enough. I must be religious. I must sacrifice. I must achieve. I have to be good enough. To even contemplate what would happen if I did not...

And so begins my anxiety.

Once I shared this with a man from church who swears when he prays and calls his wife 'bitch' and manages to do both in good heart. He said, 'Hugh, God doesn't care about your exam results.'

Once I shared this with another man from church who can speak Russian and he said, "Hugh, God loves you."

I had forgotten.

Rich Nathan in a recent sermon said that faith was two things

1. Believing there is a God

2. Believing He is good

Job, despite his testing, seems to never stopped believing that God was good. That struck me.
