On Thursday we had more lectures - this time, thankfully, there was less talk about killing babies. I'm getting mixed messages... primum non nocere (first do no harm)... so here's my thinking.

Doctors hold a range of personal views as to when the fetus is 'alive' and should be treated as a patient. The General Medical Council (GMC)'s Guidance on Personal Beliefs and Medical Practice say that "You must not unfairly discriminate against patients by allowing your personal views to affect adversely your professional relationship with them or the treatment you provide or arrange." As the GMC says, "You must make the care of your patient your first concern," doctors who hold a personal view that the fetus is not worth treating as a patient should not e.g. kill them.

I can't reconcile goodness or justice with what our culture accepts with regard to termination. I can't help but compare the ends of prenatal diagnosis (and termination of Down's babies) with Nazi Eugenics. I can't understand why we don't call it discrimination (against Down's babies for the chance of life).

A quarter of pregnancies are estimated to end in termination (WHO) even in the UK - is this good? Someone please tell me!

We live in a democracy, is this what people really want?
